ASHEVILLE, N.C. — One motorist died Wednesday after a wreck on McDowell Street by Doctors Drive beside Asheville High School, city police said.

Asheville Police Department officers placed the single-car collision just after 10 a.m. Wednesday. The driver was rushed to Mission Hospital and later died from crash injuries, according to a department spokesperson.

By Wednesday night investigators still had not named the driver or spelled out how the vehicle left the travel lane. Early briefings described only one car in the wreck and said the probe was continuing.

The crash site sits on the same McDowell Street corridor that carries students and staff to Asheville High School, whose campus address is 419 McDowell Street. Morning traffic there routinely mixes school arrivals with through travel toward south Asheville medical offices along Doctors Drive.

Mission Hospital, the city’s largest private employer and the main regional acute-care campus, is where serious McDowell Street wrecks typically go first. That hospital system anchors Asheville’s health-care job base, so fatal or critical crashes along the corridor quickly draw both police and hospital response.

Asheville Police Department detectives are asking anyone who saw the wreck or has dash-camera video to come forward so they can finish reconstructing the morning’s events. No charges had been announced when the first accounts were issued.

Parents dropping students at Asheville High School and drivers who use McDowell Street as a cut-through should expect lingering police activity at the Doctors Drive junction while the fatal investigation remains open.
