ARDEN, N.C. — Two men had been fatally shot by the time deputies reached them shortly after midnight Saturday in Arden, and the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office says it does not yet know who pulled the trigger.

Patrol deputies were sent to Pine Needle Lane, close to where Buncombe County meets Henderson County, at about 12:20 a.m. on Oct. 24 after a call reporting that someone had been shot. When they got there, they found both men already dead.

The case now sits with the sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division. Capt. Dustan Auldredge, who oversees the agency’s District 1, said in a statement that investigators are trying to identify the shooter and piece together what led up to the gunfire, and he offered sympathy to the families of the two men.

The sheriff’s office has not released the names of the men who died. The agency said their identities and further details will come out once relatives have been notified. No arrest had been announced as of Saturday.

People living at an apartment complex on the street told reporters they heard several shots overnight and at first mistook them for fireworks. One resident’s parked car was taken by investigators as evidence after bullets were found inside it. Neighbors said they did not recognize the two men and did not believe either one lived in the complex.

Arden is an unincorporated community in southern Buncombe County, south of Asheville along the Interstate 26 corridor toward Hendersonville.

Tips can go to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, which remains the lead agency on the case and has asked anyone who saw or heard something on Pine Needle Lane early Saturday to come forward.
