ASHEVILLE, N.C. — UNC Asheville had two chances from the penalty spot and could not cash either one Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 to USC Upstate in a Big South men’s soccer match at Greenwood Field.

The Spartans struck first in the 13th minute when Henry Burt finished a chance created by Josh Zawlocki and Oscar Kelly. The Bulldogs pushed back and earned a penalty kick in the 20th minute, but Upstate goalkeeper Jarrett Wuerslin dove to stop Tyler Ware. Asheville outshot the visitors 8-4 in the first half and still went to the locker room down a goal.

Burt doubled the lead early in the second half, scoring again at the 54:58 mark off feeds from Kelly and Jacob Cromedy. Kayoum Mbamba pulled the Bulldogs within one with an unassisted goal about six minutes later, and Asheville drew a second penalty almost right away. Wuerslin turned Ware away again, and Upstate held on the rest of the way.

UNC Asheville finished with 15 shots to 11 for Upstate and won seven corners to six. Lucca Barros started in goal for the Bulldogs.

Wuerslin was busy all afternoon. Before the first penalty, he had already turned away shots from Mbamba and Louie Salkeld, and later in the half he stopped a try from Charlie Wood aimed at the top right corner. Lennart Granzow also had a look for Asheville that sailed over the bar. The Upstate keeper ended the day with five saves.

The Bulldogs now stand 9-5-1 on the season with a 3-3-0 league mark, level with Upstate in the Big South standings. Upstate improved to 5-11-0.
