News Summary

Buncombe County is set to initiate an affordable housing development in downtown Asheville, featuring 206 units for households earning 80% or less of the area’s median income. Plans are moving forward, with construction set to disrupt part of Sawyer Road. The project represents a $74.5 million investment and is a response to the growing affordable housing crisis. Additionally, plans for another project for 126 units were approved earlier this year. With community support and funding secured, Asheville aims to improve its housing landscape significantly.

Exciting Times in Asheville: Affordable Housing Development is Here!

Asheville is buzzing with news that has residents feeling hopeful and ready for change! Buncombe County is making strides in its plans for a brand-new affordable housing development right in the heart of downtown Asheville. This is not just any project; it’s a significant step towards addressing the pressing need for affordable housing in our community.

What’s Happening?

The ambitious housing complex will be built on three county-owned properties along Coxe Avenue. This area is known for its vibrant atmosphere, and soon it will be home to 206 affordable housing units designed specifically for households earning 80% or less of the area’s median income. This is a huge win for many families and individuals who often face the soaring barriers of living costs in Asheville.

A Step Forward

This past week, Buncombe County Commissioners received the first renderings of the development, marking a significant milestone in the project. Plans are advancing, and excitement is in the air! However, with progress comes a little disruption; part of Sawyer Road along Coxe Avenue will need to close for a bit as construction gets underway.

Making Housing Affordable

The total estimated cost for this development will come in around a hefty $74.5 million. This investment reflects the commitment of community leaders to tackle the affordable housing crisis head on. A crucial meeting is set for March 18 to finalize the agreement with Harmony Housing, the developer for this project. It’s great to see action being taken to secure much-needed housing!

What’s Happening Elsewhere?

126 additional affordable housing units on ten acres near Brevard Road along Pine Lane. This site aims to significantly contribute to Asheville’s goal of creating 14,000 affordable rental units over the next 25 years. This shows that the city is not just talking about solutions, but actively putting plans into action.

Funding and Features

The funding for the Pine Lane housing project includes $3.9 million from the city and $6.5 million from the county. A 30-year deed restriction will ensure that these homes remain affordable for years to come. The eligibility criteria will allow those earning 80% or less and even 60% of the area’s median income to be considered for housing. It’s a welcoming offering for many in our lovely Asheville.
