Asheville

A tragic multi-vehicle crash on I-240 West in Asheville, North Carolina, resulted in the death of a 41-year-old driver on Saturday, June 7. The incident, which occurred near Exit 1B around 2:52 p.m., involved three vehicles, including the driver’s Jeep Wrangler.

The driver, identified as Zachariah Robert Cosgrove, was operating a 2015 Jeep Wrangler when the vehicle collided with a 1984 Pontiac Firebird while attempting to change lanes. The collision caused the Jeep to roll over, subsequently impacting a 2018 Ford F-150, which also overturned as a result of the chain reaction.

According to reports, Cosgrove was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was ejected from his vehicle upon impact. He was immediately transported to Mission Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. A passenger in the Jeep sustained minor injuries and was also treated at Mission Hospital; however, no specific information about their current condition has been disclosed. The statuses of the drivers of the Pontiac Firebird and Ford F-150 remain unreported.

In the aftermath of the accident, the Asheville Police Department initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. They are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in the ongoing inquiry, urging witnesses or those with relevant knowledge to contact them at (828) 252-1110.

This incident marks yet another tragic event on the roads of Asheville, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the area. Just days prior, a separate incident involving a pedestrian occurred, resulting in fatal injuries. On Tuesday night, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of Patton Avenue and North Louisiana Avenue. Investigations into both accidents are currently underway.

The Asheville community grieves the loss of life and the impact such accidents have on families and loved ones. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of safety measures, such as wearing seatbelts, in an attempt to prevent future tragedies on the road.

As the investigation progresses, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and report any unsafe driving behavior or hazards that could pose risks to others. The Asheville Police Department is working diligently to gather all necessary data to understand the causes of these accidents and implement strategies to improve roadway safety moving forward.
