Asheville – Mary Ruth Johnson McFadden, a beloved member of the Asheville community, passed away on June 3, 2025, at the age of 81. McFadden was known for her deep love for family, dedication to faith, and commitment to service, leaving behind a legacy that touched the lives of many.

Born on February 7, 1944, in Kingsport, Tennessee, McFadden was the daughter of Curtis and Julia “Pearl” Johnson. She graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School before pursuing a career in business, retiring from Westinghouse/Eaton Cutler-Hammer, where she worked as a buyer of raw metal. Later in life, she continued her education by attending classes at the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA).

McFadden was a devoted member of the Bent Creek Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, and later became a member of Sardis United Methodist Church, where she attended services until her health began to decline. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she dedicated much of her time to her church and community. She was actively involved in local organizations, such as serving as a Brownie leader and working at the Venable Community Center during little league baseball games.

Known for her passion for gardening, decorating, and cooking, McFadden delighted family and friends with her culinary talents. She was also an avid reader, often staying up late immersed in history and fiction books. Family gatherings were a highlight of her life, filled with laughter during big trips to the beach and camping adventures in Western North Carolina. Additionally, she hosted monthly card game nights with friends, creating cherished memories for everyone involved.

McFadden’s family notes that she was preceded in death by her son, Jon, and siblings, Wanda, Juanita, and David. She is survived by her devoted husband, Guy McFadden, whom she was married to for 63 years and who proudly served in the United States Air Force. Her legacy continues with her surviving children: daughter Beverly and sons Chuck and Michael. Also left to carry on her memory are her brother Curtis, several grandchildren – Drew, Emily, Nick, Devon, Taylor, Nathan, and Brandon – as well as five great-grandchildren.

The family has expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Four Seasons Hospice for the exceptional care provided to Mary during her final days, which allowed her to be comfortable and supported.

A private service will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain on June 9, 2025. The service will be officiated by Rev. Mark McFadden. Groce Funeral Home’s Lake Julian team is assisting the family with arrangements, providing compassionate support during this difficult time.

Mary Ruth Johnson McFadden will be remembered not only for her many contributions to her community and family but also for the love and kindness she shared throughout her life. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.
