Asheville Fire Department Responds to Large Blaze at Goodwill Outlet

A large fire broke out Monday morning at the Goodwill Industries outlet located on Patton Avenue in Asheville. The fire was first reported around 7:15 a.m., prompting an immediate response from the Asheville Fire Department.

The Asheville Police Department responded by closing Patton Avenue in both directions to ensure public safety and facilitate firefighting efforts. Westbound traffic is blocked beginning at Piney Park Road near Family Dollar, while eastbound traffic is stopped at Old Haywood Road. These road closures are expected to last for several hours.

Emergency services received the initial fire call around 6:30 a.m. from an individual driving by the area. Reports indicate that the blaze is taking place in a single-story commercial warehouse associated with Goodwill Industries. Fire crews are employing a defensive strategy to manage the situation due to the intensity of the fire.

As of 9:30 a.m., firefighters are facing challenges with water supply, necessitating the use of tanker trucks to assist in combating the flames. Nearby hydrants are reportedly being drained rapidly due to the high demand for water during firefighting operations.

Fortunately, there have been no injuries reported, and it has been confirmed that no one was inside the building at the time of the fire. The official cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.

To aid in the aftermath, public works crews and the company DH Griffin have arrived on-site to assist in the removal of debris once the fire is extinguished. Remaining road closures will continue to affect traffic near Goodwill Industries and the DMV in West Asheville, and drivers are advised to avoid these areas.

Background Context on Goodwill Industries

Goodwill Industries operates as a nonprofit organization aimed at providing job training and employment services for individuals facing barriers to employment. The Asheville outlet, part of a larger network of stores across the country, plays a significant role in the community by supporting workforce development and offering affordable goods to the public. This incident, occurring at the organization’s facilities, highlights the vulnerability of such community resources in the face of unforeseen emergencies.

State and local investigators are expected to conduct a thorough examination of the site to ascertain the cause of the fire, and additional updates will be released as more information becomes available.
