Quiet streets of Asheville, NC after Hurricane Helene

News Summary

Asheville, NC, faces significant challenges in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, with a notable downturn in tourism affecting the local economy. Many residents are displaced, and businesses are struggling to recover, particularly those in the restaurant and tourism sectors. Community members are coming together to support one another, but concerns grow about the rise in homelessness. Political responses to the disaster response are ongoing as residents hope for better support and a return of tourists to help revitalize the city.

Asheville’s Post-Hurricane Struggles: A City on the Mend

Asheville, North Carolina, has been feeling the impact of Hurricane Helene, and it’s no secret that the city’s local economy is struggling to find its footing. The aftermath of this natural disaster has left many residents concerned, particularly about the significant hit the tourism industry has taken. With the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and vibrant arts scene, Asheville was once a top destination for travelers, but now the bustling streets are quieter than ever.

The Local Economy Takes a Hard Hit

The tourism downturn has been a major issue since the storm swept through, leaving businesses grappling with losses. Several employment positions have been lost as local attractions and restaurants face economic uncertainty. The renowned Biltmore Estate, a cornerstone of Asheville’s tourism, reported a decline in visitors and operational challenges due to the storm. Unfortunately, this has led to some employees experiencing layoffs and temporary furloughs.

In an effort to support displaced workers, Biltmore is offering severance packages that vary based on each employee’s service length and status. However, the bright spot is that the estate is also providing a program that currently covers 100% of insurance premiums for employees. This coverage will end on January 31, which means many workers will soon start covering their part again.

For those employees still awaiting a sense of normalcy, Biltmore has been graciously offering rent subsidies and assistance for those hoping to purchase homes through partnerships with local organizations. Some of the employees remain in temporary housing, but the transition to permanent homes is hoped to be on the horizon.

Growing Concerns for the Homeless Population

Point-in-Time count, there is a rising concern about the potential increase in the number of unhoused individuals in the community. The destruction inflicted by Hurricane Helene is largely responsible for the expected growth in this population, as many residents found themselves displaced. The homeless census will take into account those currently in transitional housing situations, which are sadly becoming more common as residents find shelter in hotels following the storm.

Political Responses and Community Spirit

Restaurants Fighting to Recover

spirit of solidarity. Throughout the recovery phase, many have come together, cooking and distributing thousands of free meals to those impacted by the storm. However, the restoration process has not come without its challenges, as restaurants struggle to bear the costs of restoring operations, including expenses for potable water after service disruptions.

A Call for Support From Tourists

As the Asheville community faces the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the focus now lies on recovery and rebuilding. With support from residents and hopefully an influx of tourists, the city can begin to heal and regain its vibrant spirit.
