An Asheville man is facing multiple charges, including assault, after being accused of using an American flag as a weapon in a grocery store incident.

The Asheville Police Department received a report of an assault at a grocery store near the 25 block of Tunnel Road on Sunday, May 5. According to the police statement, an employee confronted a man who was attempting to steal a beverage. When the staff tried to escort the individual out of the store, he reportedly grabbed an American flag set and struck the employee in the head, causing minor injuries, before fleeing the scene.

Shortly after the incident, officers located the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Caleb Cameron McRae, at a nearby fast-food restaurant and took him into custody.
