Asheville is home to a variety of unique museums that offer visitors a chance to experience the city’s cultural diversity and creativity. From interactive exhibits to fascinating collections, Asheville’s museums provide something for everyone, making it an ideal destination for local residents and tourists alike.

The Asheville Pinball Museum invites visitors to step back in time with over 70 pinball machines and classic arcade games. For a $15 entrance fee, players can enjoy unlimited gameplay while also learning about the history behind each machine. This interactive museum caters to both gaming enthusiasts and families looking for a fun outing.

Located at 5063 U.S. 441 South in Sylva, the American Museum of the House Cat is one of the few cat museums in the country. It features thousands of pieces of cat art and memorabilia, showcasing the integral role cats play in human lives. Proceeds from the museum support low-cost spaying and neutering services for cats, further exemplifying its commitment to animal welfare.

The Antique Car Museum, situated at 111 Grovewood Rd. in Asheville, has been a staple since its creation in 1966. This museum offers visitors a glimpse of vintage vehicles, including a 1913 Ford Model T and a rare 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Admission is free, although donations are appreciated to help support the museum’s operations.

Another upcoming attraction is the Museum of Costume Jewelry, which is set to open by the end of summer 2025 at 60 Haywood St. This enticing museum will display costume jewelry from iconic designers such as Coco Chanel and Christian Dior, drawing inspiration from the vision of local collector Sharon Ryback. The museum will also include a library with over 250 jewelry books and host guest lectures focused on jewelry design.

For those seeking a unique travel experience, the Craggy Mountain Line offers a “museum on wheels” adventure. Trolley car rides along historical tracks will depart every Thursday and Saturday at 4 p.m. Tickets are priced at $15, making this a meaningful way to explore Asheville’s rich history while enjoying picturesque scenery.

Located in Maggie Valley, the Wheels Through Time Museum boasts over 300 rare American motorcycles and automobiles. The museum features a “Decade Collection” and contains more than 25,000 pieces of transportation history memorabilia, making it a must-visit for automotive enthusiasts.

Brevard’s Aluminum Tree & Ornament Museum, located at 189 W. Main St., is a seasonal exhibit dedicated to retro aluminum Christmas trees. Although the exhibit will return in November 2025, it has already captivated visitors with its unique holiday offerings.

In 2023, the Asheville Museum of History reopened in the historic Smith-McDowell House, focusing on the diverse history of Western North Carolina. The museum features permanent exhibitions, guided tours, rotating exhibits, and educational programs. Starting June 2025, the museum will host a Summer Concert Series, where musicians will perform on the museum’s front porch each Wednesday through Saturday. Concert tickets will be priced at $15 for general admission, $10 for museum members, and free for children aged 16 and under. Proceeds from these events will support the museum’s initiatives.

Food and beverage options during the Summer Concert Series will include pre-ordered picnic baskets and beverages for sale, encouraging guests to bring their picnic meals for a relaxed atmosphere. Additionally, local activities and games will be provided to enhance the community experience during the concerts.

The Asheville Museum of History operates Wednesday through Saturday, with regular admission set at $10 for adults and $6 for military personnel and students aged 7-17. Children under six can enter free of charge, ensuring accessible opportunities for families and individuals to learn about the area’s rich heritage.

With diverse museums and engaging events, Asheville continues to be a vibrant locale for cultural exploration, inviting people of all interests to discover its unique history and creativity.
