Asheville – A shooting in downtown Asheville early Sunday morning has resulted in one death and multiple injuries, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Asheville Police Department (APD). The incident took place on Rankin Avenue near College Street just after midnight, at approximately 12:07 a.m. on June 1.
The victim of the shooting has been identified as 26-year-old Andy Garcia Porras. When officers arrived at the scene in response to reports of gunfire, they found Garcia Porras deceased in the roadway. In addition to the fatality, several innocent bystanders were affected by stray gunfire during the altercation. One bystander was transported to Mission Hospital and is currently listed in stable condition, while others sustained minor grazing injuries and were treated and released at the scene.
APD Captain Joe Silberman characterized the situation as a “gun fight” between two individuals, leading to the tragic outcome of one person dead. At this time, no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting; however, authorities have identified a person of interest. The identity of this individual has not been disclosed as the investigation remains active.
Investigators are diligently working to gather evidence, including examining physical evidence and reviewing video footage captured during the incident. Additionally, the District Attorney’s office will be involved, and an autopsy for the deceased victim will be conducted as part of the investigation. A total of 22 shell casings were recovered from the scene, further emphasizing the seriousness of the confrontation.
According to the Asheville Police Department, this shooting is considered an isolated incident, and there is no current threat to the public. Despite this discouraging event, the APD is navigating challenges stemming from a staffing crisis that has affected its capacity to deliver adequate police services. In response to ongoing safety concerns downtown, discussions are currently taking place about reinstating a bike patrol and realigning district responsibilities to improve response times to incidents.
This shooting marks the second homicide investigation for the Asheville Police Department this year, signaling a challenging start to 2023 for public safety in the area. The overall community is urged to assist with the investigation, as law enforcement encourages anyone with information, or who may have video from the night of the shooting, to reach out. Citizens can contact the Asheville Police Department directly at 828-252-1110, or provide anonymous tips via the TIP2APD smartphone app, or by texting TIP2APD to 847411.
The APD continues to prioritize the safety and security of Asheville residents and visitors while navigating through these difficult circumstances. As the investigation unfolds, members of the public are being asked to remain vigilant and informed to help ensure community safety.
