News Summary

The Asheville Police Department is investigating two shootings that occurred over the weekend, one resulting in a fatality. A 26-year-old man lost his life in a separate incident, prompting police to seek public assistance. The community is left shaken by these violent events as the investigation continues.

Asheville – The Asheville Police Department is actively investigating two separate shootings that occurred over the weekend, one of which resulted in the death of a 26-year-old man. The police are seeking information from the public regarding these incidents that left the community unsettled.

The first shooting took place on Saturday at around 2:32 a.m. on Atkinson Street. Officers responded to a report of gunfire and upon arrival, found a large crowd in the area. While canvassing, police discovered multiple shell casings and several vehicles damaged by gunfire; however, no victims were located. Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident involved a verbal altercation between two men that escalated into a shootout. Authorities are currently searching for two suspects in connection to the Atkinson Street shooting.

The second shooting occurred in the 900 block of West Chapel Road on Sunday at approximately 10:57 p.m. Responding officers reported discovering 12 shell casings and an unoccupied vehicle that had been struck by gunfire. By the time the police arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene. The Asheville Police Department urges anyone who may have information regarding this incident to reach out at (828) 252-1110.

In an unrelated incident, a shooting on Rankin Avenue early Sunday morning claimed the life of 26-year-old Andy Garcia Porras. Officers arrived at the scene around 12:07 a.m. to find Porras deceased in the street. Several bystanders were injured due to stray gunfire; one was transported to Mission Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition, while others received minor injuries and were treated on-site.

The shooting was triggered when security at a nearby nightclub refused entry to Porras and a friend after they were accused of harassing a group of women. Following a physical altercation, Porras reportedly left the scene to retrieve a firearm from his vehicle. Upon his return, a confrontation ensued with a patron who attempted to intervene. Both Porras and the patron discharged their guns during the scuffle. Some bystanders were inadvertently struck, raising concerns about public safety.

The patron involved in the shooting fled the scene initially but later surrendered to law enforcement. Following a thorough investigation, police concluded that the patron acted in self-defense during the incident; therefore, no charges will be filed against him. According to North Carolina law, individuals are permitted to use deadly force if they believe it is necessary to prevent imminent death or serious bodily injury, provided they are not the aggressor.

Forensic technicians from the Asheville Police Department collected multiple shell casings from both shooting scenes, and investigators have recovered the firearms involved in the Rankin Avenue incident. This shooting marks the second homicide investigation of the year for the Asheville Police Department, indicating a troubling escalation in violent incidents within the community.

The police continue to encourage the public to come forward with any information related to these shootings to assist in apprehending those responsible and ensuring community safety.
