News Summary

The Walmart Supercenter in East Asheville has reopened after being closed for nearly eight months due to Hurricane Helene’s severe impact. The store’s full reopening was celebrated with a ceremony featuring local officials and Walmart executives. New features include a fresh grocery section and an automotive area. Walmart also made generous donations to local organizations to support community recovery efforts following the hurricane’s devastation.

Asheville

The Walmart Supercenter in East Asheville fully reopened on Friday morning after being closed for nearly eight months due to Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact. The store, located at 125 Bleachery Blvd, had initially part reopened on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2024. During its partial reopening, customers were able to shop for general merchandise, excluding fresh groceries and automotive products.

Reopening Details

The full reopening of the store occurred on May 23, 2024, with a ceremony that featured speeches from Walmart executives and local lawmakers, including Congressman Chuck Edwards and Representative Don Davis. The event also displayed photos documenting the extent of the damage caused by the hurricane, providing a stark contrast to the store’s restored condition. The completion of the remodel not only restored the store but also added a fresh grocery section and an automotive area for shoppers.

Community Support and Donations

As part of its commitment to the community, Walmart donated $5,000 to “Shared Vision,” a non-profit organization dedicated to providing school supplies to students in need. Additionally, the company contributed $3,000 to the Asheville Police Department as a gesture of appreciation for their efforts in the recovery process following the hurricane.

Impact of Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida as a category 4 storm on September 27, 2024, causing widespread destruction across several states, including North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. The hurricane resulted in 230 reported deaths, marking it as the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The storm’s aftermath was compounded by Hurricane Milton, which followed soon after and complicated recovery efforts.

Ongoing Challenges

Despite the reopening of Walmart, some roads in Asheville and surrounding areas remain closed due to ongoing storm damage. Nearby businesses, including Lowe’s and Walgreens, also suffered significant damages from the storm. The flooding and destruction from Hurricane Helene led to a complete remodel of the Walmart Supercenter as the store had to address extensive flood damage.

Employee Relocation and Local Recovery

During the prolonged closure, all associates were offered the opportunity for relocation to nearby stores to maintain their employment. Upon reopening, these employees were welcomed back to help restore services for the local community.

Reflection on the Hurricane Season

The 2024 hurricane season has been characterized as one of the worst on record, with meteorologists attributing the severity to factors such as climate change and global warming. The extensive damage and loss of life from Hurricane Helene serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with severe weather events.
