BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NC – On April 3, 2023, Buncombe County District Attorney Todd M. Williams announced that he will not seek re-election when his current term expires on December 31, 2026. Williams, a Democrat, has served as the elected District Attorney for the 40th Prosecutorial District since 2014, completing three terms in office. Following his term, he expressed a desire to pursue opportunities outside of the District Attorney’s Office.
In his announcement, Williams encouraged qualified lawyers to consider running for the position, emphasizing the importance of diverse legal backgrounds and experience in upcoming elections. He acknowledged the critical role his office’s staff has played in supporting the pursuit of justice, thanking them for their unwavering assistance and diligent service on behalf of victims and justice.
As he prepares to conclude his years of service, Williams stated that he will make a final decision about his position closer to the candidate filing deadline. Despite his plans to step down from the role, he affirmed his commitment to serving the community until the end of his term.
In unrelated news, the Buncombe County judicial system faced scrutiny with two significant incidents. An Asheville man, Dennis Gates Miller, recently pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to looting during a curfew. Miller was sentenced to a prison term of 48 to 80 months in the North Carolina Department of Corrections, having exploited the community while it was recovering from a natural disaster.
Additionally, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office reported a concerning incident involving a 57-year-old woman, Geneva Daniels. Daniels was taken into custody on a meth possession charge and was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility on April 18, 2023. Tragically, she died the following day while receiving medical treatment. In the wake of her death, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has launched a comprehensive independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her passing.
Following Daniels’ death, Sheriff Quentin Miller contacted the District Attorney’s office the morning after the incident to report the event, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the need for thorough examination of the events leading to her demise.
Todd M. Williams has been a prominent figure within the Buncombe County justice system since he first took office in 2014. During his tenure, he has focused on various initiatives aimed at improving public safety and ensuring justice for victims. His decision to not seek re-election comes amid a time of significant change and challenges in the local legal landscape, particularly in light of the recent incidents that have brought attention to the operations of the sheriff’s office and the detention facility.
As Williams prepares to step away from his role, he leaves behind a legacy shaped by his efforts to promote justice and support the legal community. With the upcoming elections, it remains to be seen who will follow in his footsteps and take on the responsibilities of maintaining law and order within the Buncombe County judicial system.
