Clarence Theodore “Ted” McKinney, a beloved member of the Asheville community, passed away on June 13, 2025, at the age of 91. His lifelong dedication to family and the great outdoors left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Born on July 13, 1933, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, Clarence was the son of the late Louis and Josie McKinney. He lived most of his life in the area, where he built a legacy that emphasized the importance of family gatherings, outdoor activities, and a strong sense of community spirit.

For 71 years, Clarence was married to Barbara Cain, whom he fell in love with after a brief 21-day courtship. Their enduring relationship was a testament to their deep bond and commitment to each other. He was also preceded in death by a son, William Louis McKinney, marking a poignant chapter in his life.

Clarence honorably served in the U.S. Air Force, where he demonstrated a commitment to his country that was matched only by his devotion to his family. Described as an avid outdoorsman, he was passionate about camping, hunting, and fishing. He cherished the moments spent during family cookouts and outdoor explorations, creating memories that would last for generations.

He is survived by his three children: Rebecca Ann Garreau of Cumming, GA, Diane McKinney Green of Asheville, and Kevin Lane McKinney of Asheville. Clarence’s legacy continues through his extensive family, which includes 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren, spanning five generations.

Funeral services for Clarence McKinney are scheduled for June 18, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home, located at 1401 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806. The family will receive friends starting one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Following the service, burial will take place at Pisgah View Memorial Park, situated at 1529 Smokey Park Hwy, Candler, NC 28715.

Pallbearers for the service will include family members: Jeffrey Garreau, Jesse Garcia, Richard Messer, Kevin McKinney, Jr., Mason Messer, Cameron McKinney, Corey McKinney, and Conner Stamey. Their presence at the service highlights the close-knit nature of the McKinney family and their commitment to honoring Clarence’s memory.

As family and friends come together to celebrate Clarence Theodore “Ted” McKinney’s life, they remember a man who not only loved the outdoors but also cherished the moments spent with his family. His contributions to his community and the values he instilled in his loved ones will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
