ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team secured a decisive 5-2 victory over the University of North Carolina Asheville on Sunday afternoon in an intense series finale. The Runnin’ Bulldogs displayed their prowess on the field, led by a stellar performance from starting pitcher Reid Bertram, who maintained a no-hitter through the first five innings.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs wasted no time in setting the tone for the game, with Alec Burns igniting the team’s offense in the first inning by launching a solo home run to left center, giving GWU an early 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Gardner-Webb added to their lead with two more runs. Humberto Torres delivered a crucial single to bring home Mark Black, followed by Ethan Liao’s single that scored Torres. Burns showcased his power once again in the fifth inning, smashing his second home run of the day to right center, extending the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ lead to 5-0.
Despite Gardner-Webb’s strong start, UNC Asheville refused to back down. The Bulldogs managed to put up a two-spot in the bottom of the seventh inning, sparked by a pair of singles that narrowed the gap to 5-2.
The pitching prowess of Reid Bertram played a crucial role in Gardner-Webb’s victory. Bertram delivered an outstanding performance, going 6.0 innings without allowing a hit, striking out six batters, and conceding just two hits. Connor Maggi stepped in to close out the game and secure the save, while Cole Schiff was charged with the loss for UNC Asheville.
Following their impressive win, Gardner-Webb University will return home for their next game on Tuesday, May 14, against Queens University of North Carolina at 6:00 p.m. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will aim to carry the momentum from their series finale victory into the upcoming matchup as they continue their pursuit of success on the diamond.
