Kathy Soule, a dedicated staff member from Asheville-based non-profit Elben Charities, shared her thoughts on the situation: “We are moving forward, but it is going to be a long haul. It’s not something we’re going to fix in the next 3 months, 6 months; it could be a year to two years to get everybody back on their feet again.”

With the holiday season fast approaching, organizations like Elben Charities are making plans to spread a little cheer, even in challenging times. “We’ve always had the Saint Nicholas project, where we create a toy store for low-income families to shop for free for their children for the holidays,” Soule said.
