Emergency services responding to a multi-vehicle accident on I-26 near Brevard Road.
A multi-vehicle collision involving eight vehicles temporarily closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 near Brevard Road. The crash, which happened at Mile Marker 34, resulted from two drivers failing to reduce their speed, leading to a chain reaction. One person sustained a minor injury, and citations were issued for failure to reduce speed. The road reopened after approximately 1.5 hours, but concerns about roadway safety persist following this incident and previous accidents in the area.
Asheville, NC – The eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 near Brevard Road have reopened following a significant multi-vehicle accident that occurred earlier in the day. The collision, which involved eight vehicles, including a commercial motor vehicle, prompted a temporary closure that lasted approximately 1.5 hours.
The incident took place at 12:13 p.m. at Mile Marker 34, specifically one mile after Exit 33 (NC-191/Brevard Road). According to preliminary reports, the crash was triggered when two vehicles failed to reduce their speed, leading to a chain reaction collision with the other vehicles involved. One individual sustained a minor injury from the accident and was tended to on the scene.
In response to the accident, authorities issued two citations for Failure to Reduce Speed to the drivers who were primarily responsible for the crash. Traffic camera footage showed extensive backups, with long lines of vehicles seen between Long Shoals Road and Brevard Road during the closure.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) managed the incident and initially estimated the road would reopen by 2:30 p.m. Fortunately, the situation was resolved sooner than expected, allowing traffic to resume its normal flow.
This incident follows a series of accidents on I-26 that have raised concerns about roadway safety in the area. On February 4, a collision involving an Asheville Police Department (APD) vehicle occurred on I-26 Westbound near the 35-mile marker. This accident involved three vehicles, resulting in citations issued to both the APD officer and another driver for failure to reduce speed. However, there were no injuries reported in that incident.
Additionally, a separate tragic incident occurred earlier on Interstate 26, where an 87-year-old man from Anderson, South Carolina, named David Warner Dean, was killed in a wrong-way crash near exit 15 for Jupiter Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while another driver involved was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Earlier in the day, a multi-vehicle crash had also been reported on the Green River Bridge at about 9:30 a.m., which temporarily closed part of the eastbound side of I-26 near exit 54. Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes as NCDOT worked to clear the area, with estimates indicating that the road would not reopen until midnight on Thursday.
These incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding roadway conditions and driver behavior in the Ashville area. The NCDOT and local law enforcement continue to emphasize the importance of adhering to speed limits and maintaining safe driving practices, especially in high-traffic zones. As more traffic returns to the highways, officials urge all drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution to prevent further accidents on the roads.
