News Summary

Jeff Maren has been appointed as the new Head Women’s Tennis Coach at UNC Asheville. With a strong coaching background, he aims to build on the legacy established by former coach Lise Gregory. Maren previously led Liberty University to significant successes and brings experience from his recent tenure at New College of Florida. His focus on developing well-rounded student-athletes is expected to enhance the program’s competitive presence in collegiate tennis.

Asheville, NC – Jeff Maren has been appointed as the new Head Women’s Tennis Coach at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, as announced by Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone on May 16, 2025. Maren becomes the ninth head coach in the history of the program, stepping into a role that follows the successful tenure of former coach Lise Gregory.

Cone highlighted the significance of Maren’s hire, noting both the excitement of welcoming him to the Bulldog family and the challenge of continuing the strong tradition established by Gregory. Maren brings a wealth of experience to the position, having recently served as the Head Coach for New College of Florida, an NAIA program that launched its inaugural season in 2025. During his short time at New College, Maren was instrumental in recruiting 20 players to fill the men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Prior to his stint at New College, Maren had a notable 12-year career as the head women’s tennis coach at Liberty University. His tenure there featured an impressive overall record of 184 wins to 98 losses. Notably, under Maren’s guidance, the Liberty Flames achieved excellent performance in conference play, particularly within the Big South Conference, where he held a record of 42-10.

Additionally, Maren coached the team to a 26-6 mark in the ASUN Conference and maintained a perfect 5-0 record in Conference USA. His leadership led the Liberty Flames to the semifinals or finals of various conference tournaments 11 times, including two appearances in the Big South Championship in 2016 and 2018 and further participation in the ASUN and Conference USA championships in 2022 and 2024, respectively.

Maren’s coaching proficiency also extended to individual achievements, as he coached four nationally-ranked singles players and three nationally-ranked doubles pairs during his time at Liberty. His previous experience included a six-year role as the associate head coach at North Texas, where he played a crucial role in turning around the program from a disappointing 2-19 record in 2007 to winning two Sun Belt Conference Championships in 2010 and 2012.

In his new role, Maren expressed enthusiasm for becoming part of UNC Asheville and emphasized his respect for Lise Gregory’s significant contributions to the program. His reputation within the coaching community has been recognized, with numerous peers lauding his skills, character, and integrity. Colleagues have commended him for his ability to develop teams at a championship level, while also valuing education alongside athletic achievements. Maren’s approach fosters well-rounded development for student-athletes, focusing on their growth both in sports and academics.

As UNC Asheville moves forward under Maren’s leadership, the tennis program aims to build on its legacy, fostering talent and enhancing its competitive presence in collegiate tennis.
