Asheville’s 21st Annual Miniatures Show: A Celebration of Small Wonders

Asheville is gearing up for an exciting event that art lovers won’t want to miss! The 21st Annual Miniatures Show is ready to take center stage, showcasing the creative talents of both new and local artists. Kicking off online on February 5, 2023, and opening in the gallery on February 7, 2023, at 11 a.m., this show is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the fantastic world of miniature art.

How the Show Works

For those eager to check out the artworks before anyone else, Wednesday’s online opening is set to feature a one-hour preview of the pieces. Following the preview, phone sales will commence at 12 p.m., giving collectors a chance to snag these small treasures. If you prefer the in-person experience, you can visit the gallery when it opens on February 7. Plus, an evening reception from 5–8 p.m. promises live music, locally made flower arrangements for sale, and even on-demand typewriter poetry by Eddie Cabbage. What a way to spark creativity!

Artworks with Heart

This year’s show features 16 talented artists who have channeled their creativity into creating captivating miniature art pieces. Among the new faces are Sonya Clemons and John Sperry. Clemons, known for her 5”x 5” canvases, draws inspiration from southern traditions, particularly food, capturing kitchen scenes and the loving hands of her mother. On the other hand, Sperry breathes life into whimsical characters using oil pastels and acrylics, all while having built a substantial painting career over the last 25 years.

But that’s just a taste. The lineup also includes noteworthy local artists like Kent Ambler, Mike Ball, Carl Block, Cornbread, Doug Frati, Wayne Hewell, Jack Klippel, Stacy Lambert, Ellen Langford, Peter Loose, Vicki Miller, Karl Mullen, Liz Sullivan, and Tim Whitten. There’s definitely something for everyone!

The Rise of Miniature Art

Interestingly, miniature art is becoming increasingly popular among younger audiences, thanks in part to platforms like Instagram and TikTok. This trend reflects a broader shift in the art world where collectors of all ages are finding joy in collecting pieces that not only stand out but also tell significant stories.

Local Talents to Discover

Asheville is known for its artistic flair, and this event continues to showcase local talent like Renae Dotson. Dotson specializes in stunning miniature scenes, highlighting vintage life and farm settings, often crafted in a 1:12 scale. Having discovered her love for miniatures in her thirties, her works are characterized by everyday objects and personalized themes that make for cherished gifts. Some pieces can take her anywhere from 20 to 30 hours to complete, and Dotson focuses on visual storytelling, choosing to forego character dolls in her creations.

Additionally, artists like Noël Yovovich are making their mark in the community. Yovovich, who switched from pottery to metalsmithing, dabbles in intricate jewelry design. Her pieces often involve extensive sketching and a variety of metals, allowing art lovers to wear tiny masterpieces on their bodies daily, available at local spots like Woolworth Walk.

The Miniatures Show runs until February 26, 2023, giving you plenty of time to explore these stunning pieces. The gallery is located at 64 Biltmore Avenue, open from Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you’re intrigued and want to learn more about the artwork or the show, feel free to visit AmeriFolk.com or give them a call at 828.281.2134.
