With flexibility in bookings and a growing community interest, this initiative emphasizes resilience and engagement in outdoor sports in Asheville.

Asheville, N.C. – The Asheville Municipal Golf Course is set to launch a new disc golf course designed by professional player and 2020 U.S. Disc Golf Champion Chris Dickerson. The course will take over the front nine holes of the golf course and is scheduled to open on Friday, Aug. 1, at 9 a.m.

The new disc golf course features a championship-length, 18-hole layout with a par 61 specification. Players will have access to two tee pad placements for each hole, catering to varying skill levels and preferences. The layout offers two options for distance: the blue layout measures over 7,900 feet, while the red layout extends more than 6,600 feet, appealing to both experienced and novice players.

Months of restoration work have been carried out on the front nine after it suffered substantial damage from Hurricane Helene in September 2024. While the disc golf course will serve as a temporary use of the area, it provides an opportunity for the community to engage in the sport during the ongoing restoration of the golf course, which is expected to be fully operational by mid-2027. Meanwhile, the back nine of the golf course remains open for play.

Tee time bookings for the disc golf course are available, and walk-ins will also be welcomed, offering flexibility for those eager to test out the new layout. The installation of the disc golf course comes in the wake of challenges faced by local disc golf facilities due to Tropical Storm Helene, highlighting the resilience and dedication of the community to ensure the continuity of this popular recreational activity.

Community involvement has seen the Western North Carolina Disc Golf Association experience fluctuations in membership, peaking at over 350 in 2023 before decreasing to around 240 following the storm. Despite this decline, interest in disc golf remains strong, with various ongoing events and initiatives planned at multiple local courses. This reflects the sport’s growth since its informal introduction in 2000, as it has become accessible to individuals of all ages and skill levels.

Disc golf has gained popularity for its engaging and inclusive nature, fostering a sense of community among players. The new course at the Asheville Municipal Golf Course represents an exciting development for disc golf enthusiasts, further enhancing opportunities for players in the region.

With its anticipated opening, the disc golf course stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to rebuilding and reimagining recreational spaces following natural disasters. As the Asheville Municipal Golf Course adjusts to the changing landscape of recreational activities, the city continues to highlight the importance of outdoor participation and engagement in sports.
