Wong’s battle with cancer began three years ago when he was diagnosed and given a prognosis of 6 to 12 months to live. His resilience and determination, however, allowed him to defy expectations and live for a longer period, during which he continued to influence the craft beer industry.

Highland Brewing Company, established in Asheville in 1994, was the first legal craft brewery to open in the area since Prohibition. This venture followed Wong’s retirement from a successful engineering career, marking the beginning of his significant contribution to the craft brewing movement. Over the years, Highland Brewing has attracted more than 150,000 visitors annually and is recognized not only for its beers but also for its sustainability initiatives and commitment to community involvement.

Wong’s influence extended beyond his brewery, as he played a vital role in establishing Asheville as a nationally recognized craft beer hub. His contributions were celebrated in 2023 when he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor bestowed by the governor of North Carolina. Highland Brewing’s inception started in the basement of Barley’s Taproom, where Wong crafted the first brews using refurbished dairy equipment. The brewery operated at that location for 13 years before expanding to its current facilities.
