Asheville – Oscar P. Wong, the founder of Highland Brewing Company and a pivotal figure in the Asheville craft beer scene, passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on May 25, 2025. His family, including his wife Anna and daughter Leah Wong Ashburn, were by his side during his final moments.

Wong’s battle with cancer began three years ago when he was diagnosed and given a prognosis of 6 to 12 months to live. His resilience and determination, however, allowed him to defy expectations and live for a longer period, during which he continued to influence the craft beer industry.

Highland Brewing Company, established in Asheville in 1994, was the first legal craft brewery to open in the area since Prohibition. This venture followed Wong’s retirement from a successful engineering career, marking the beginning of his significant contribution to the craft brewing movement. Over the years, Highland Brewing has attracted more than 150,000 visitors annually and is recognized not only for its beers but also for its sustainability initiatives and commitment to community involvement.

Wong’s influence extended beyond his brewery, as he played a vital role in establishing Asheville as a nationally recognized craft beer hub. His contributions were celebrated in 2023 when he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor bestowed by the governor of North Carolina. In addition, May 16 was declared Oscar Wong Day in Asheville, further honoring his legacy.

In 2015, Wong passed the reins of Highland Brewing to his daughter Leah, ensuring that his vision for the brewery would continue. Under Wong’s leadership, the company received numerous accolades, including the Small Business Administration’s Person of the Year for North Carolina and the Brewers Association’s Recognition Award.

A heartfelt celebration of Wong’s life is scheduled for June 29 at Highland Brewing, where community leaders and fellow brewers are expected to pay tribute to the man often referred to as the “Godfather of Asheville Craft Beer.” His passing has led to an outpouring of grief and remembrance within the local community and the wider craft brewing landscape.

Wong’s journey began as the son of Chinese immigrants in Jamaica. He pursued higher education at Notre Dame, ultimately leading to a successful career as an engineer before turning his passion for brewing into a business. Highland Brewing’s inception started in the basement of Barley’s Taproom, where Wong crafted the first brews using refurbished dairy equipment. The brewery operated at that location for 13 years before expanding to its current facilities.

Throughout his life, Wong was known for his generosity, humility, and ability to connect with others, often mentoring new brewers and fostering relationships within the craft beer community. His legacy is not only celebrated within Asheville but is also recognized at a national level, as his contributions to the craft brewing movement continue to inspire. The tributes highlighting his values and impact reflect the deep respect and admiration he garnered throughout his lifetime.
