Asheville, NC was the place to be on Tuesday night as the Pitt Panthers faced off against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in an exciting midweek baseball battle. Fans filled the stands with high hopes, but it was the Panthers who walked away with a stellar 8-1 victory, showcasing both powerful offense and solid pitching.
Leading the charge for Pitt was Aidan Coleman, whose performance on the mound was nothing short of fantastic. Coleman pitched an impressive six innings, allowing just a single run on six hits, which marked the longest outing of his career. Not only did he strike out three batters, but he also managed to accomplish this feat without giving up any walks. This outing secured him his first win of the season, leaving the Panthers feeling optimistic.
Following Coleman was left-handed reliever Ethan Firoved, who came into the game and made an impact. Firoved threw three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out five batters. With this performance, he earned his third multi-inning save in just four appearances this season, boasting an astounding 0.68 ERA along with 18 strikeouts over 13.1 innings. Quite impressive, right?
On the offensive side, it was Sebastian Pisacreta who led the charge for Pitt. Pisacreta had a remarkable night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. He also had the unique honor of being hit by a pitch not once, but twice during the game, contributing to Pitt tying their season record for hit-by-pitches with a total of five.
Non-starter Keeton Burroughs made quite an impact when he stepped in, finishing the game 1-for-2 with a career-high two RBIs and a run scored. Not to be left out, teammates Luke Cantwell, AJ Nessler, and Lorenzo Carrier also added their names to the list of hitters, securing key hits and supporting a robust team effort.
The scoring kicked off early in the game when Pitt managed their first run in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Bulldogs didn’t back down and quickly responded with a run in the top of the second to level the score at 1-1. But here’s where the Panthers showed their true colors: they struck right back, scoring two runs in the same inning. An AJ Nessler single paved the way, and an RBI double from Pisacreta solidified their lead.
The eighth inning was when Pitt really turned on the heat. They scored a whopping five runs, breaking open the game and making it clear they were in control. This inning featured two hit-by-pitches, an RBI fielder’s choice by Burroughs, and even a sacrifice fly by Cantwell. The excitement was palpable! They capped off the game with another run in the ninth, courtesy of a sweet RBI double from Burroughs, driving in Pisacreta.
With this incredible win, the Pitt Panthers are riding high as they continue their eleven-day road trip. Next on the agenda is a matchup against East Tennessee State University, which starts on March 7th. With the momentum from this game, fans are eagerly anticipating what the Panthers will bring in their upcoming series.
As Tuesday night comes to a close, one thing is clear: the Pitt Panthers are certainly a team to watch as they climb higher in the world of college baseball!
