Asheville, NC – Scott Friedholm has officially resigned as the head coach of the baseball program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville after serving in the position for 11 seasons. Friedholm’s tenure commenced on June 17, 2014, and he has since established himself as both the longest-tenured and winningest coach in the program’s history.
During his time as head coach, Friedholm’s overall record stood at 195 wins, 340 losses, and 1 tie. His most successful season was in 2023, when the Bulldogs managed to finish the year with a balanced 26-26 record. The 2023 season also marked a notable performance where Asheville was victorious in every non-conference weekend series, achieving an impressive start with an 11-1 record prior to entering the Big South Conference schedule.
Friedholm’s coaching prowess was exemplified in the development of standout players, including Robbie Burnett, who received All-Big South First Team honors in 2023 and was named Preseason Player of the Year for the subsequent season. Moreover, the following year, the Bulldogs had their first-ever Preseason Pitcher of the Year in Colby Guy, alongside Clay Edmondson, who became the second player to earn Pitcher of the Year accolades under Friedholm’s guidance.
In addition to his success on the field, Friedholm made significant contributions off the field. He initiated a fundraising event titled “Baseball Night in Asheville,” which remarkably raised over $112,000 for the baseball program in the past year. Furthermore, under his leadership, the program established a tradition of wearing the Jeff Fox #6 jersey in honor of Bulldog alum Jeff Fox.
Throughout his 11 years at UNC Asheville, 15 players earned All-Conference honors, showcasing Friedholm’s ability to develop talent. The program also garnered three Big South Conference Sportsmanship Awards in 2015, 2018, and 2022, reflecting a commitment to excellence in both athletics and sportsmanship.
Following Friedholm’s resignation, Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone expressed appreciation for the coach’s contributions, recognizing the supportive environment he fostered for student-athletes. She also emphasized the commitment of the athletics department to continue providing support during this transitional phase for the baseball program.
The baseball community at UNC Asheville now faces the task of finding a successor who can build upon the foundation Friedholm established over the past decade. His departure leaves a notable impact on the program, as he played a crucial role in shaping the competitiveness and reputation of UNC Asheville baseball.
As the search for a new head coach begins, the university community reflects on the legacy of Scott Friedholm, whose leadership significantly influenced the program’s trajectory. His tenure not only marked an era of challenges but also major achievements, and the impact of his journey is likely to resonate with players and fans for years to come.
