Swannanoa River Road Welcomes Back Drivers in Asheville!

Asheville, North Carolina – Exciting news for everyone who travels through the area! After months of hard work and dedication, Swannanoa River Road (N.C. 81) is officially open again for business. Yes, you heard that right! The much-loved road between Tunnel Road (U.S. 70) and Fairview Road has reopened its lanes, and traffic is flowing smoothly once more.

Extensive Reconstruction After Hurricane Helene

If you didn’t already know, Hurricane Helene took quite a toll on our beautiful landscape, causing significant damage that affected many roads. Swannanoa River Road was hit particularly hard, with the storm washing away large sections of the roadway. This prompted the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to step in and undertake an extensive reconstruction project that has just been completed in less than 120 days!

The task wasn’t a walk in the park. NCDOT’s team, along with contract crews, faced numerous challenges from the get-go. First things first, they had to clear away tons of debris, which included fallen trees, mud, broken asphalt, and some stubborn old construction materials. It was all hands on deck to restore the road to its former glory.

How the Reconstruction Process Unfolded

The restoration process kicked off with crews focusing on rebuilding the roadbed. Large rocks were strategically placed to ensure a solid base, which is essential for supporting underground utilities that needed to be restored. Once that important groundwork was laid down, they went ahead and graded the stone base before capping it all off with shiny new asphalt. Talk about a makeover!

But that wasn’t all; once the new road surface was ready, the team added new guardrails, pavement markings, and even traffic signals. Just this week, a temporary power source for the new traffic signals was installed, marking a significant milestone in this project.

Many local businesses, which depend on the flow of traffic from both visitors and locals, are likely to see an uptick in customers now that access to the area is restored. Not to mention, the vibes in the community can only get better from here!

Plans are also in the works for the completion of the Azalea Road project, which aims to enhance access to the Gashes Creek community and the WNC Nature Center. This effort will further improve connectivity and support our beloved local attractions.
