The UNC Asheville Track and Field Team achieved remarkable success at the Gamecock Challenge, setting multiple records and delivering outstanding performances. Isabel Richardson led the charge by setting a new school record in the women’s 3000m with a time of 9:58.35. Other athletes, including Jalen Anderson and Nikole Baikova, also excelled, capturing personal bests and securing notable placements. With a strong display of talent, the Bulldogs look forward to their upcoming meet at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational.
Asheville, North Carolina – The UNC Asheville Track and Field Team had an exhilarating weekend at the Gamecock Challenge, where they dazzled spectators with a record-breaking performance. Athletes showcased remarkable talents, shattering personal bests and school records, making it an event to remember.
Highlighting the day was Isabel Richardson, who not only competed fiercely but set a new school record in the women’s 3000m race with an astonishing time of 9:58.35! This feat saw her breaking the earlier record of 10:05.18 that had stood firm since 2004, previously held by Micki Logue. Richardson finished an impressive 11th overall, marking a significant milestone for the Bulldogs.
Also in the women’s 3000m, Ella Moore demonstrated her skills by recording a personal best of 10:19.64, which earned her a seventh place finish in her heat. The energy on the track was palpable as both athletes pushed themselves to new heights.
On the men’s side, Jalen Anderson sprinted his way into the spotlight by advancing to the 60m final. Achieving a personal best of 6.87 seconds, he clocked in fourth overall and tied for No. 2 on the all-time best list. Freshmen runners Aaron Higgins and Gabriel Buie also took to the track in the 60m, finishing 24th and 25th, respectively, proving that the future is bright for the Bulldogs.
In the men’s 200m, Shemarr Session captured a personal best of 21.27 seconds, securing fifth place and landing amongst the top performers in the all-time list. Anderson continued to impress by finishing sixth in the same event, solidifying his status as an emerging star.
The middle distances were no less thrilling! Nikole Baikova finished second in the women’s 600m with a time of 1:37.12, placing her at No. 2 on the all-time best list for Asheville. Meanwhile, Ethan Acosta represented the men well by completing the 600m in 1:30.70, finishing 18th.
In field events, Murielle Jeanite achieved a personal best in the women’s long jump at 5.29m, claiming 11th place. Her dedication was reflected in every leap she made. In the men’s high jump, both Kellan Ferrell and Gabe Matthews cleared 1.77m but had near misses at the 1.82m bar, showcasing their potential.
As the distance runners took over, Paul Kirpotich finished the men’s mile with a personal best time of 4:14.69, landing at No. 4 on the All-Time list. Meanwhile, Nate Sullivan made his indoor debut in the men’s 5000m, crossing the line at a fine 15:19.71 for ninth place.
In relays, the men’s Distance Medley Relay (DMR) A team placed third overall with a time of 10:24.33, marking a new No. 46 for D1 this year. There was joy across the board as the women’s 1000m saw both Maddie Hamuka and Payton Murphy secure respectable finishes with season’s bests.
The Bulldogs are looking forward to their next competition at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on February 14, hosted by Liberty University. As they continue to break records and achieve personal bests, their momentum is sure to carry them to even greater heights!
