News Summary

Two administrators from the University of North Carolina System have been terminated following undercover videos revealing violations of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. The videos, released by Accuracy in Media, showed a former dean and another administrator admitting to bypassing DEI regulations. This incident highlights escalating tensions regarding DEI initiatives in higher education, amidst ongoing legislative debates aimed at limiting such policies within the UNC System. Further investigations are planned by the organization, potentially affecting other institutions. The future of DEI in North Carolina’s education remains uncertain as political pressures mount.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two administrators from the University of North Carolina (UNC) System have been dismissed following the release of undercover videos that indicated violations of the system’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. This action reflects a growing tension between the administration’s policies and the ongoing debates surrounding DEI initiatives in higher education.

The videos were made public by Accuracy in Media (AIM), a group noted for its undercover investigation tactics. In one instance, the former dean of students at UNC Asheville, Megan Pugh, was recorded admitting to flouting DEI-related restrictions set by the Board of Governors. Following the video’s release last Tuesday, she is no longer employed by the university.

Janique Sanders, an administrator from the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement at UNC Charlotte, was also terminated after a video surfaced where she acknowledged her involvement in equity work against the university’s stipulations. The swift action taken by the universities underscores the serious implications of noncompliance with the newly imposed DEI policies.

According to AIM’s president, the organization intends to unveil more videos highlighting similar concerns from other North Carolina institutions, including UNC-Chapel Hill, potentially starting this Monday. Guillette further indicated that a series of at least four more investigations related to North Carolina’s higher education institutions are forthcoming.

The legality of AIM’s undercover recordings is supported by North Carolina law, which permits conversations to be recorded with consent from only one party involved. However, AIM’s methods have sparked a debate over ethical journalism standards and the broader implications these investigations may have on educational environments across the state.

This turmoil comes as the UNC System has actively sought to curtail DEI initiatives, aiming to replace existing policies with guidelines that emphasize administrative neutrality. The debate surrounding DEI in higher education is intensifying as Republican lawmakers are advancing legislation aimed at banning DEI policies entirely within the UNC System. A recently proposed bill, Senate Bill 558, has cleared its first committee hurdle and initially aimed to prevent investigations related to hate speech, though modifications now allow for some investigations with restrictions on others classified as “protected under the First Amendment.”

The legislative changes have met significant opposition from Black lawmakers, raising concerns that such measures could impede research capacities, particularly at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Critics contend that the proposed legislation may lead to unequal access to scholarships and support based on racial demographics.

As evidence of the ongoing shift in policy, the UNC System has previously decided to eliminate the requirement for DEI courses for graduation. These changes are part of a larger national trend inspired by Republican efforts to restrain DEI initiatives in educational institutions, mirroring rising anxieties about political influence in higher educational frameworks across the United States.

AIM has also announced plans to extend its investigations beyond North Carolina, suggesting that similar scrutiny of DEI policies might expand to schools in other states. This broadening focus reflects the organization’s commitment to discovering and reporting on what it perceives to be significant violations of educational principles and policies concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The removal of the two administrators serves as a stark reminder of the tense climate surrounding DEI policies within educational institutions. As debates continue to unfold, the future of DEI in North Carolina’s higher education landscape remains uncertain.
