High school football player in action on the field

News Summary

Canadian athlete Zander Baptiste has officially committed to Temple University as a defensive back, following a standout career in high school. His commitment strengthens Temple’s secondary as the coaching staff looks to build a promising future for the football program.

Asheville

Canadian-born Zander Baptiste has made waves in the college football landscape by committing to Temple University on Saturday as a Class of 2025 prospect. Baptiste, who will play defensive back for the Owls, shared his decision via a text message to OwlsDaily shortly after receiving his first Division I scholarship offer from Temple, following an official visit earlier that week.

The announcement of his commitment came swiftly after he disclosed the scholarship offer on Thursday. Baptiste’s football journey has seen him excel at various levels, culminating in this significant step toward college athletics. He stands at 6 feet 4 inches and weighs 185 pounds, showcasing an impressive physical presence for a player in the defensive backfield.

Baptiste has a standout record from his time at Asheville School in North Carolina, where he was an All-Big Six Conference First Team selection. During his senior season, he contributed significantly to his high school team, which claimed the 2024 North Carolina Independent Schools Division II state championship. He recorded 20 receptions for 348 yards and seven touchdowns on offense, while on the defensive side, he tallied 25 tackles and made three interceptions, returning two of those for touchdowns.

Prior to his success at Asheville, Baptiste played at The Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey, during the 2023 season, where he accumulated 542 receiving yards and scored six touchdowns. His defensive contributions were significant as well, recording two interceptions and earning a Second Team All-Mid-Atlantic Prep League selection. His football career began in Quebec City, where he played under Canadian rules before transitioning to the U.S. prep school system.

Baptiste’s recruitment by Temple was initiated by the previous coaching staff in the spring. Despite interest from various programs, the only scholarship offer he announced after high school was from Division II Pace University. His athleticism is notable, featuring a personal best time of 10.88 seconds in the 100-meter dash and a remarkable 39-inch vertical leap.

As Temple’s coaching staff continues to enhance its secondary, Baptiste’s arrival adds valuable depth. The Owls previously added three defensive backs through the transfer portal this spring and are keen on attracting more talent. Baptiste will transition from playing cornerback in prep school to safety at Temple, emphasizing his versatility and skill set.

His recruitment process was notably guided by Brian L. Smith, Temple’s defensive coordinator and safeties coach, who recognized Baptiste’s potential in the secondary. With Baptiste now committing to Temple, the university is bolstering its defenses and preparing for the future with promising young prospects.

Baptiste’s journey from Quebec to North Carolina and now to Temple University reflects a dedication to not just football, but to growth as an athlete. His commitment adds an exciting chapter to both his development and the future of Temple football.
