PHOENIX, Ariz. — Amish Shah, the Democrat, has claimed the win against Republican Jay Feely in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, a Scottsdale-area seat that both parties spent heavily to win.
With more than 95% of the vote counted, Shah held 52.58% to 45.38% for Feely. The race has not been officially certified, and Arizona results stay unofficial until county and state officials finish tallying and certify them.
In a statement to supporters on Wednesday, the day after the election, Shah credited Feely for a hard-fought campaign and promised to represent everyone in the district whether or not they backed him. On election night, Feely told supporters he and his wife were at peace with whatever result came.
Shah is an emergency room physician and former state lawmaker. He won the Democratic primary despite millions of dollars spent against him by national party groups. Feely, a former Arizona Cardinals kicker, was endorsed by President Donald Trump and beat two rivals for the Republican nomination. Most analysts had rated the general election a toss-up.
Outside money flooded the contest. By mid-October, spending had topped $25 million, including about $6 million from a Trump-linked PAC and roughly $6 million from the main Republican super PAC for House races, against about $5 million from its Democratic counterpart.
In an October debate, the two found agreement on water policy and on keeping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, but clashed over data centers, with Shah saying he did not want them built in the district.
