ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Voters in Asheville and the rest of Buncombe County are down to the last week of in-person early voting before the Nov. 3 general election. The window statewide closes at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
County early voting sites open at 8 each weekday morning and stay open until 7:30 at night, Monday through Friday, Oct. 30. The final Saturday runs a shorter day, from 8 a.m. until the 3 p.m. cutoff.
There are 13 sites spread across the county. In Asheville, the Dr. Wesley Grant Southside Center on Livingston Street is taking the place of the county elections office as a voting site, and ballots are also being cast at the East, North, South and West Asheville library branches and the Friendship Community Center. Outside the city, voters can use libraries in Black Mountain, Candler and Fairview, fire departments in Swannanoa and Candler, and community centers in Leicester and Weaverville.
During early voting, a voter may use any site in the county of residence. That changes on Election Day, when each registered voter has to go to an assigned precinct, so people who wait until Nov. 3 should look up their polling place rather than return to an early site.
Early voting is also the main chance for unregistered residents to sign up and vote in one stop, which is generally not offered on Election Day. Same-day registrants need 30 days of residency in Buncombe County ahead of the election and bring proof of where they live, such as a current utility bill. Every voter will be asked for photo identification at check-in.
People who already have a mail ballot can hand it to an election official at any early voting site while it is open. Curbside voting is available for eligible voters who need it.
