I-26 Connector Work Brings Nightly Closures in Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Drivers in Asheville, N.C., will run into a fresh round of lane and ramp closures this week as state crews keep building the Interstate 26 Connector, with most of the work set for overnight hours from Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 6.

The biggest change for West Asheville commuters is on the Patton Avenue frontage road. Its right lane will shut each night from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. between Westgate Shopping Center, near Cliff Street, and Jackson’s Western Store just beyond Resort Drive so crews can pave.

Later in the week the same frontage road gets new lane lines and a shift in where traffic flows. Workers will also set up temporary concrete barriers there during those overnight shifts.

Downtown, the Exit 2 ramp that carries Haywood Street traffic onto westbound I-240 and eastbound I-26 will close overnight on the same 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. schedule while curbs are torn out.

On the interstate itself, overnight crews will close as much as a mile of the westbound right lane on I-240/I-26 by the Captain Jeff Bowen Bridge. Crews are pulling out guardrail and putting up a wall in that stretch.

Daytime drivers are not spared entirely. On Hazel Mill Road, the stretch from Emma Road to Richland Street gets fresh pavement during business hours, roughly 9 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon, with flaggers waving cars through. Friday is held in reserve as a rain day for the Hazel Mill paving if weather slows the crews earlier in the week.

State transportation officials with NCDOT want motorists to ease off the gas in work zones, watch for posted signs and build extra minutes into their trips. Officials noted that every date and time could move if the weather turns.
