ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Voters in Asheville and the rest of Buncombe County head to 80 polling places on Tuesday, Nov. 3, after the county set a record for early ballots in this midterm, with nearly 96,838 people voting before Election Day.

Buncombe County Election Services said every Election Day site has been set up and secured. Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m., and anyone already in line at closing time can still cast a ballot. Each site is led by a chief judge and two party judges so both major parties are represented at the table.

Voters must go to their assigned precinct, bring a photo ID and know that registering on the same day is not an option on Election Day. A list of accepted IDs is posted at buncombenc.gov/vote, and the elections office takes calls at 828-250-4200.

Voters in Precinct 60.4 have a new site this year. Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Fairview closed unexpectedly over the summer, so that precinct now votes at A.C. Reynolds High School, 1 Rocket Dr.

During early voting from Oct. 15 to Oct. 31, 475 poll workers and parking attendants staffed 13 sites. The Weaverville Community Center and South Buncombe Library drew the biggest crowds of the 16-day stretch. County staff spent the weekend finishing setup so Tuesday lines move quickly.

The surge matched a statewide pattern. More than 2.8 million North Carolinians voted early, the most ever for a midterm and 30% above the 2022 total. Unaffiliated voters made up 35% of the early electorate, and the mountain-based 11th Congressional District is one of the races both parties are watching.
